[ed.note: Member Col. John ‘Jack’ Frost, (USAF, Ret.), flew fighter-coverage for the Nagasaki bombing run on 09 August 1945. Leveled the playing field, needless to say. Hiroshima bombing run did not appear to register on Emperor’s radar, three days earlier. Hiroshima B-29 Enola Gaye approached as a weather survey plane. Nagasaki approached, the secondary target, it was suddenly decided P-51 fighter coverage was in order for the last functioning, and geo-strategically expensive, atomic bomb in the US arsenal.

‘After exceeding the original rendezvous time limit by a half-hour, Bockscar, accompanied by the The Great Artiste, proceeded to the primary target, Kokura.[13] No less than three bomb runs were made, but the delay at the rendezvous had resulted in 7/10ths cloud cover over the primary target, and the bombardier was unable to drop.[14] By the time of the third bomb run, Japanese antiaircraft fire was getting close, and Japanese fighter planes could be seen climbing to intercept Bockscar.[15]’ [Wikipedia]’

Subject: 66 years
All: 66 years ago, on a fighter sweep over Korea and Southern Japan, the emergency channel opened up with the instruction to proceed to map coordinates, which turned out to be about 10 miles south of Nagasaki, patrol until relieved and shoot down anything that intrudes into this area regardless of markings.
We were in position for slightly less than an hour when there appeared a cloud emerging from the under cast at unbelievable speed. Reaction, what the hell kind of weather is this. A pause. Emergency channel,” relieved and return to base.. Base was 5 miles north of Naha, Okinawa. As we flew over Yontan AB we could see a B-29 which turned out to be BocksCar, the star of the show. Now that was indeed a real “no fly zone…”
…with no political uncertainties.
We really didn’t learn much, did we.
